Oboe's range

The oboe is quite a distinctive instrument, with its instantly recognisable tone and its double reed mouth piece. In range it is very similar to the flute but tonally it’s the complete opposite. As the range gets higher the oboe’s tone loses sharpness and in the lower ranges becomes wide and round. Because of its particular tonal and lyrical qualities the oboe is an excellent melody instrument and should be used appropriately when scoring for the orchestra.

Trills & Tremolos

Most trills and tremolos are available on this instrument, the best of which are within and around the stave and within the perfect fifth limit. Back to top
