Flute's range

The flute is at the top of the woodwind hierarchy, with its range and brilliance in tone. It is also the only instrument in the woodwind section not to use a reed.

Harmonics

Harmonics are merely ‘overblown’ notes. The performer will play a fingering an octave lower than the written pitch and overblow the note to get the pale quality of a harmonic. The notation is the same as a string harmonics with a little circle above the note. Back to top

Trills

These can be used for all kinds of colouristic effects. Stay within a tone above and below the note being trilled on for best results. Back to top

Tremolos

These have proven very effective in the flute. To get best results for stay within a perfect fifth in the lower range and a perfect forth in the higher range. Back to top
